BMW Headquarters, Bavaria Road-Midrand

Honouring Heritage

2014 – 2019

The Original building was designed by Halle Theron and partners in 1984, since then, the Courtyard Garden has been neglected and added onto. The archival material of this Iconic Masterpiece presented a simple design that over time became lost as maintenance gardeners did their own interpretations. Our biggest challenge was to change how the current landscape design turned its back on the building, with no visual or physical connection other than a wide central walkway. The modernist approach of the 4 quadrants depicting the BMW logo
stayed central to our design.

Work at BMW has continued over the years and we are now in the process of changing the whole campus to a more indigenous, water-wise garden. The existing labour-intensive exotic gardens and Kikuyu lawns have been replaced by an indigenous garden that resembles the Highveld Landscape with a 1 km running track situated within the indigenous bush. The Project received a SAPOA Award in 2005.
